Is AI Visibility Different From SEO?
Short answer: yes — and the difference matters more than most businesses realize.
The direct answer
SEO gets you into a list of results. AI visibility — also called AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) or GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — gets you mentioned inside the answer itself, when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity a question in your category. A page that ranks on page one of Google can be completely absent from an AI’s answer, and a business with no SEO investment at all can still get recommended by an AI if it’s well cited elsewhere. They’re related, but they’re not the same system.
Why it matters
A growing share of buyers now start their research inside an AI assistant instead of a search engine. When that happens, there’s no page of ten blue links to scan — there’s one answer, naming a small handful of businesses. If yours isn’t one of them, you don’t lose a ranking position; you lose the conversation entirely, often without ever knowing it happened.
Optimizing for Google alone in 2026 is optimizing for half the discovery journey. The businesses pulling ahead are treating AI visibility and SEO as one connected system, not a choice between them.
What to do about it
Start by checking whether your business currently gets mentioned when someone asks an AI assistant a question you’d expect to win. Then look at the same fundamentals that influence both systems — accurate, consistent information about your business across the web, content that answers real questions directly, and technical accessibility for AI crawlers, not just search engines. Fix what’s shared first; then address what each system needs individually.
